This means that politicians running a country should not be allowed to enforce anything written in religious texts.

If this were the case, there would not be enforcement against murder, theft, perjury, etc.

The best example is Catholicism, there are many people who claim to be Catholic but don't actually believe in God. No religion preaches violence and hate. So before you say "religion sucks and preaches wars and hate" remember that the religion itself doesn't approve such acts and that the people who do this are actually sinners according to their religion.

That should be the case but it isn't. From personal experience I know that many Catholics don't actually care about God nor religion. The only reason they claim to be Catholics is because most of their family / friends are Catholics as well. It's not that they follow that religion, it's just the pressure to do what the majority does. Such people cannot be considered as true Catholics nor they can represent their religion. It's like saying Assad represents all the people in Syria and it's the people's fault because Assad used chemical weapons (We discussed this recently so I took it as an example).

In short, religion is good if people know to value and truly follow the religion. Sadly, most people nowadays are atheists and they claim to be followers of a certain religion because the majority follows that religion as well (social pressure). Atheists who claim to be religious are the ones who make a religion look bad and sinful. I have nothing against atheists (just to be clear), everyone has the right to choose what he believes in. However, I have against atheists who claim to be religious for reasons mentioned above.
