The Grove Street Families were formed in Ganton (initially in Grove Street) before spreading to the rest of Ganton and other neighborhoods. History before this time period (late 80's) is unknown, and much of what happened to the families during the late 80's is also unknown. However, what is known is that the Families are one of the oldest gangs in Los Santos - this possibly means that they are older than the Ballas (who formed during the 1970's) - giving the possiblity that the Families evolved from the 1960's or even possibly earlier.

In the early 90's, set leader Carl "CJ" Johnson returned to the set and helped his brother Sean "Sweet" Johnson make Grove a reality again. Along with their previous Lieutenants and OG's, Lance "Ryder" Wilson, Melvin "Big Smoke" Harris, and well known wannabe rapper "OG Loc"

No one is entirely sure what set the following events into action, many say it was due to set leader Sean not being willing to deal with narcotics, as himself and his brother were the only ones who could see what it was doing to the set, but no one had pictures the betrayal that was to follow, with Ryder, Big Smoke and OG Loc turning on their set leaders, some even say it began with the death of Carl and Seans mother. Both brothers were busted during a shootout under Mulholland Intersection, elite unit C.R.A.S.H took Carl out to the country, before releasing him and returning a report saying he had stolen their weapons and broke free. Sean on the other hand was rushed to a prison hospital with serious gunshot wounds. Big Smoke and Rider then took charge of the family while OG Loc worked on his rap career.

A few months later, armed to the teeth and backed by the infamous japenese Yakuza, Carl came back and showed Los Santos why no one had messed with Grove Street before, and slaughtered everyone that betrayed him and his brother. before taking the entire of Los Santos as his turf, and stealing a lot of military equipment and handing it to the Yakuza. The Yakuza proceeded to vocalise their backing of the Grove Street Families until eventually the army were brought in to retake Los Santos, which meant everyone wanted a piece of the action now that Grove Street were no longer part of the equation, most of them now in jail.

Ten years later, Ryders brother Alex landed in Los Santos, with the keys to a house in Grove Street, Along with his brother in arms, Lance Kingston, he planned on reliving the Johnson brothers infamy, and proving that Ryders family wasn't as bad as everyone thought, it was time to bring back Grove Street, and it was time to do it properly.
