How can somebody go to the moon when the earth is flat?
By doing nothing.

Yes,the Americans did go to the moon,I've watched a documentary on it a long time ago.The reasons the Russians couldn't get there first was lack of resources compared to the US and the way they approached the whole thing, while the Americans used multiple stage rockets that decoupled to reduce their weight, the Russians wanted to fly a rocket to the moon and bring it back as a whole.
Also,to escape Earth's gravity, they didn't shoot up straight for the Moon, instead they aimed for the Earth's orbit to save on fuel and got around it.

My memory of the documentary is a bit rusty,if you're interested tho look it up,i'm sure there's plenty on the web that you can find.

Also,enjoy this footage:

@G19 nice explenation, but they never escaped Earth's gravitational field.

I saw something similar with my father some months ago. I don't know how real it is, but there was evidence that Russians actually wanted to explode a rocket on the moon.

They will never have enough fuel to just burn directly to the moon, as you said, but they can speed it up so they go there.
They went around 190km out of Earth, to set the orbit. What USA did was very smart, even though Russia was higher on space technology, however perhaps Russia was just not interested to go to moon, i mean there is no much thing there.

Saturn V was the rocket which took Apollo 11 astronauts to the moon. You don't need to reach the earth's escape velocity to reach the moon. You need to adjust your orbit in such a way that the moon will be in the same position as you will be at the same time and this is called orbital rendezvous. It doesn't matter whether we got the moon in 1969 or not because we now know that it's possible both theoretically and practically.
