Video editing software

[Abstract]

Hey guys.

I'm looking for some help. I've been recording some videos of myself kitesurfing, and I've been wanting to put together a montage, however, I'm using my fathers laptop (because I don't have one (rip old dell)) and I found Windows Live Moviemaker doesn't work. So I've been trying to get it to work but nothing works. I'll explain whats wrong in the spoiler below:

Whenever I load a video into Windows Live Moviemaker, the preview video is a black screen with no audio. I'm not an expert in video editing, so it could be my lack of knowledge. Could it be WLMM doesn't support 1080p videos? I've been wondering about this. I really want to use it because it's simple and it's efficient. It's always a black preview screen no matter how many times I re-upload the videos into the program.

Otherwise, if you don't have the solution to my problem, could you please let me know of a good free video editor for windows?
