Are there any other user accounts on the machine? Or just one?

If it appears only once, just shut it down and don't worry.
If it happens sometimes and sometimes not, run an virus scan for the machine.
If it happens all the time, might be a Windows error, logout (not shutdown) and log back in to your account. And run a virus scan.

As I said, run a virus scan, it's quite stupid to not have an antivirus unless you're an advanced user.
I recommend AVG, but install what you prefer.

I know advanced users who have antivirus because they are too lazy to constantly check all their files for suspicious activity.

Get a malware scanner too like spybot search and destroy for example
