From the name, black holes are some kind of holes which contain nothing. They have no atoms whatsoever, no light, nothing.
A black hole is a place in space where gravity pulls so much that even light can not get out. The gravity is so strong because matter has been squeezed into a tiny space. This can happen when a star is dying. Because no light can get out, people can't see black holes.
A black hole has a boundary, called the event horizon. It is where gravity is just strong enough to drag light back, and prevent it escaping. Because nothing can travel faster than light, everything else will get dragged back also. Falling through the event horizon.
The question is, will we be able to use the Black Holes on our advantage? If we get full control of them, we can understand where they pull you, if you resist from dying, perhaps we can see if they even take you somewhere else. If we find a way to use them to get out of where we want it.
But, is it possible for you to get out of the black hole? Well, light can't make it out, so you need to find something faster than the light, which almost all scientists say that it is impossible.
According to Albert Einstein's theory of general relativity, black holes are uninhabitable chasms of spacetime that end in a "singularity," or a mass of infinite density. It's a place so bleak that even the laws of physics break down there.
But, what if we fall into the black hole with no such machine that can go faster than the light?
Then, we're pretty much fucked, coser to the center, gravity is even stronger. If you were caught by the pull of a black hole, you would be sent into free fall toward its center. ... No one knows for certain what happens to those atoms once they reach the center, or "singularity," of a black hole.
Many robot space ships have actually disappeared while they were taken off earth for exploring. The radar can't get their signal and the only way is for them to run into a black hole. But, if they get stuck there, will it ever disappear? If no, than that black hole would not be with nothing anymore, but with metal, gas and other space ships materials.
Isn't this a bit weird though? The space ships weren't too far away from earth, before they got dragged into the black hole. Is there a possibility that the whole earth falls into a black hole where there is nothing. Would we be able to survive?
Of course not, the speed that black holes pull us, we'd all crash onto each other and something and explode to pieces in less than a second, we would feel it at all, we'd all just disappear, but earth might not, we have a long journey to be stuck on the middle and by that time, everyone is dead for sure.

There's no way for a black hole to be the reason for these disappearances. A Swarzchild black hole is formed when a start having mass above the Chandrashekar limit to run out of fuel (from nuclear fusion) and implode due to the immense gravity of the mass. However, there are two possibilities, either it'd become a black hole or a neutron star. Besides, there are supermassive black holes which lie at the center of every galaxies. Every object has a Swarzchild radius, ie the radius we would have to be shrinked to in order to become a black hole. The Swarzchild radius is so low that you have to compress the entire mass (weight) of the earth into the size of a peanut in order for it to become a black hole. So, if there was a black hole anywhere near us where a space craft can ever reach, we're fucked. Black holes are called black holes because the orbital speed of the black hole at the event horizon is equal to the speed of light so you'll need something faster than the speed of light to orbit the black hole or return from it but nothing can travel faster than light so even light can't escape. Even if the sun turned into a black hole after it's death (which won't happen), nothing would happen to the orbits of the planets revolving around it. Except that the sun would be so small to view from earth and light doesn't escape a black hole.

Speaking of gravity, gravity is an illusion. According to Einstein's general theory of relativity, space and time are not two different entities but one. Both time and space are relative. Mass creates a curvature in the space-time fabric, means mass effects both the space and time around it. The moon's following a straight line around the earth but the space around earth is bent so the moon appears to be travelling in a circular orbit. In the case of a black hole, the space and time around it is so bent that it literally creates a hole in the space-time fabric, hence the name "black hole". So, both time and space don't exist after the event horizon. So, any information entering a black hole is lost forever according a famous equation (which I don't remember right now, sorry :P, with a few googling, I might do). Also, anything that enters a black hole will be broken down to a molecular level due to tidal forces, so you'll be "sphagettified" . The gravity you'd feel near your legs would be a lot more than what you'd feel near your head, so you'd feel like being stretched so hard.

However, light not being able to escape a black hole doesn't mean that we're not able to detect one. Light is made up of quantas called photons, which don't have any rest mass but have relativistic mass. Gravity effects the path of light. So, the light coming from the galaxies behind the black hole will undergo "gravitational lensing" which lets us detect the presence of a black hole or any massive objects.

Well the answer to your question whether a black hole's going to be helpful in the future is very complicated.

Because, first of all we don't know what happens after you pass the event horizon. Second, the closest black hole to us is many light years away and there's no star in our interstellar neighborhood which would turn into a black hole after it's death.

There are theories like the string theory and the wormhole theory which suggest that you'll end up in a different black hole in a different spot in a universe at a different time if you enter the event horizon but we're not sure.

We're currently using the immense gravity of black holes to bend and view the light coming from the galaxies behind it. However, if we're ever able to travel near a black hole, we could use its immense gravity to change our speed, depending on which direction we're going and also as a time machine to slow down time as the more gravity you experience slower the time passes for you (this is called gravitational time dilation, google it up). I can think of many other uses of black holes too.

So as far as i understood, you'd say that the space ship would take the advantage of the black whole to get out of it, when the gravity gets you lose to the horizon. Its a good idea, but I think i'd take large calculations to realize if we can do that or not, if we can go that far for the black hole to not attract the space ship again, I think its not possible with the speed of our space ships, well yet.
If you would open a hole in between the whole world which starts from a place and ends on the other side and you'd fall, what would happen? Well, you'd die because of the heat obviously, but if an object was, he'd go close to the other side, but it would stop immediately, because the center of the earth would attract it on a very large power.
So, till the middle of the earth, the object would be raising speed, but once it passes it, it would start lowering it, because of the gravity. So, it would fall back and so on, till it gets stuck in the middle.
Earths gravity is way lower than a black hole and its unsure whether you can or cannot have the much power to get out of its gravity, by getting the advantage of the gravity it self.
However, there is another issue.
What if the gravity is so strong, that we don't only lose our consciousness, but probably explode. The body would most so fast forward, that our blood would smash really hard on our legs which would make our whole body explode and therefor die. We don't know, but this is a huge issue.

Gravity slingshot technologies allow us to get proves up to one forth the speed of light, according to a NASA statement earlier this year (can't confirm, pretty sure it matches their statement).
The thing with black holes is that we don't know what's in there, even light bends and gets sucked into it.
You will experience such extreme G forces due to acceleration the back of your probe/ship will be a bunch of kilometers behind you, whilst you are already way further yourself.

For now, there's not much known about black holes and learning about Mars and other bodies. Especially Jupiter as it has a much of interesting and promising moons such as Europa and the other Galilean moons.
