Good rule of thumb is: don't buy any Microsoft product within the first year because it will be full of bugs.

There are no major updates in that operating system compared to Windows 7. I mean, I don't see how a computer running Windows 8 is much more of a powerhouse than a computer that is running Windows 7. Windows 8 is Microsoft's attempt at creating a blended experience. Notice how if you use the Windows Phone, Microsoft Surface ( tablet ) or any XBOX360 with the latest update, it all looks the same. I think it will be their biggest mistake to be honest, unless they re-introduce the start button again in a future update.

I had a chance to upgrade for about $20 as well but I decided not to. Why? Windows 8 brings no significant updates (in my opinion) except for the new desktop un-optimized Modern UI. There are a few tweaks under the hood, yes, but the updates in the UI make it less attractive choice for desktop computers.

In spite of what I just said, I'm not completely against Windows 8. In fact, I love it on tablets -- the devices the whole OS has been designed for.

On a non-touch screen laptop or desktop I would stay with Windows 7.
